Herbal Ointments, Salves and Balms
Ointments, salves and balms are just as easy to infuse with oils. Let’s first differentiate between the three. Although there are different takes on the meanings of the three skin formulas, generally salves and balms are basically one and the same, containing both oils and a wax in a solid form that melts on contact with the skin. An ointment is very similar, as it also contains both oils and a wax, but in a softer form. In other words, salves and balms contain more wax than ointments.
So how does one infuse herbs into an ointment, salve or balm? Simply choose one of the infusion methods for oils (click here for previous article). This infused oil will then be added to your wax and possibly butters, depending on your recipe. Don’t worry; recipes are coming.
