Guilded Illuminations - Decorating Candles in Metallics - Part 1

Nothing is more striking than the sparkling sheen of metallics. Therefore, it is of no surprise that the shimmer of gold and silver would also be applied to candles, allowing the glow of the candle light to be amplified and accentuated. One might think that making metallic candles would be difficult considering their incredible beauty, but in actuality they are extremely easy and can be done without knowing how to make candles. All of the techniques are applied to a completed candle, either made or purchased from a store or supplier.

There are several ways to create a guilded or metallic candle. It is too expensive to make a candle entirely metallic, which is why when lighting a metallic candle purchased from the store, the white center of the candle can be seen after using it for the first time. The candle is covered in a thin layer of metallic paint after the candle is made. For this reason, you can purchase inexpensive pre-made candles and decorate them without having to be a candle maker. Choose a color candle that compliments or matches the color of metallic you plan to use, which can be gold, silver, copper, red, blue, green, etc.

One way to apply a metallic to a candle is to dip the candle in metallic lacquer. This can be done to round or spherical candles and small tapers. Place the lacquer in a dipping can. Simply hold the wick of your candle with pliers and dip the candle in the lacquer, remove, and allow the candle to dry on wax paper (tapers should be hung to dry).

For candles that have a sharp edge, such as pillars, votives, and square or triangular shapes, use a bronzing powder. Lacquer will not adhere properly to sharp edges. Apply the bronzer to the candle, and use a hair dryer set on low to adhere the bronzer to the candle. This will produce a slightly speckled look.
